How can I create the data files? This page will explain Real Time Historical Data and show you how you can use the Xenith Data Downloader (XDD) to download real time historical data and place it in real time continuously updating .csv (comma separated value) simple text files. These files can be read by any application that can read simple text data. Stock Market Data Types Defined Real Time Market Data Real time market data implies that the data is current within a few seconds of an actual trade. Real time data can be for intraday or end of day or even weekly chart bars. It simply means that the last shown share price is occurring right now. Intraday Market Data Intraday market data means that the data is for intraday share prices but it may or may not be delayed. This means that intraday market data is not necessarily real time. Streaming Market Data Streaming data means that the data is continuously updated every few seconds, usually in real time but it can also be delayed. It is usually for just the current share prices and may or may not include historical bars. Historical Market Data Historical market data refers to a file containing share prices for many bars of data into the past. It is usually not current data and is used for back testing a trading system. Historical market data may be for any timeframe. Intraday historical data would refer to data for many bars on timeframes smaller than daily bars. Intraday does not mean that the data is current. Real Time Historical Market Data Real time historical market data is the special case where the historical bars or records are current to within a few seconds. Prices are updated continuously in real time. This data is very hard to find. There are hundreds of sites offering real time data in the form of price quotes. There are also hundreds of site offering older historical data for back testing. This site is dedicated to actual real time continuously updating historical data files. These files have a record for each bar and can be used to created real time bar charts with date, time, open, high, low and close share prices.
